This course focuses on the development of interpersonal, oral communication skills, including, in particular, the ability to manage conflict in a productive win-win manner so as to build relationships, rather than undermine them. Leadership Skills

October 02, 2014 - November 06, 2014

One of the many definitions of leadership is enabling a group to engage together in the process of developing, sharing and moving into vision, and then living it out. This definition – correctly – promotes the idea that leadership focuses on moving an organization or a work group to a new, higher level of effectiveness, efficiency and/or workplace fulfillment. Aging Processes

October 22, 2014 - November 26, 2014

This course will provide basic knowledge of the aging process and common medical conditions. The aging process component of the course focuses on understanding the impact of aging on the individual, concepts of successful aging and how these understandings may be utilized in your professional role. We will look at the planning process from a hands on perspective relating to the senior's housing setting. Content will be approached from present practices and future possibilities

Human Resources Management

March 03, 2015 - April 14, 2015

This course introduces the framework for a successful Human Resources (HR) function in the seniors’ housing residence. The course introduces the HR tasks and clarifies the ways in which they are common to HR in any industry or organization, while also focusing on the ways in which these tasks are unique to the senior’s housing site. This course is delivered online. Participants will be given online instructions upon registration. Each week participants will login into the virtual classroom at the assigned time.

Principles of Recreation and Leisure

March 05, 2015 - April 16, 2015

This course will look at defining recreation/leisure and its relationship to activity planning within the context of the senior's housing environment. Management Principles

April 21, 2015 - May 26, 2015

This course will examine key areas of management principles as well as the common skills that effective managers must refine. The course will focus on practical elements of managerial activity relying on discussion and analysis of shared experiences of course participants. This course is delivered online. Participants will be given online instructions upon registration. Each week participants will login into the virtual classroom at the assigned time.

Site Governance and Management

April 23, 2015 - May 28, 2015

This course focuses on the strategic management of the seniors' housing site. The perspective presented includes a legal, political and ethical framework in which a seniors' housing manager achieves the organization's mission. Also included are the General Manger's roles in forming an effective management team as well as an examination of the General Manager's role in relation to the site's Board of Directors, or other governing entity.

Personal & Professional Development

May 13, 2015 - June 17, 2015

This course will give you skills and perspectives to help you present yourself in a professional manner. You will learn how to manage your personal life and your work life to achieve balance and successfully reach your goals. Your belief in yourself and your increased confidence will make you happier, healthier, and more effective in personal and work relationships. The course will provide new information, interesting experiences and opportunities to assess your own needs. You will develop and individualized action plan for short and long-term growth both at work and away from work.

Older Adult Certification Course (external offsite)

To earn credit for this course, Activity Coordinator students must complete the two-day “Older Adult Certification Course,” which is offered by the Physical Culture Association of Alberta.
